Discussion at "Transformation im Dialog – Flachglas closed loop"

Glass stones Copyright: © RB

The recycling of flat glass conserves natural raw material resources, reduces the required melting energy and the resulting CO2 emissions. Although construction glass can be produced without loss of quality using recycled material, flat glass fragments are usually landfilled or used for the production of lower-quality products (e.g. glass bottles, insulation wool) and thus not returned to a closed cycle. Current research results will be communicated and then discussed with experts from practice and politics.

The aim is to find answers to questions such as: What are the ecological and economic opportunities of a closed material cycle? What logistical obstacles must be overcome? What regulatory requirements and subsidies are needed? The networking of those involved in the material cycle, including sub-sectors that are often difficult to reach but very relevant, such as demolition and landfill, is to be supported by the event.

As part of the "Transformation in Dialogue" series of events organised by the Federal Building Academy, the Junior Professorship for Reuse in Architecture is part of the discussion round on the question: How can a closed material cycle of used flat glass be achieved without loss of quality?

Date: 15 November 2023 from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.

Registration takes place via the Bundesstifung Bauakademie.

Powerskin Conference December 8th in Aachen

Environmental aspects have shaped facades in various ways over the last decades. The decreased demand for operational energy and the growing share of renewable energy lowered the amount of greenhouse gas emissions during this phase. Based on this improvement, the building fabric becomes the relevant parameter with environmental potential to unlock. Buildings in stock store energy and greenhouse gas emissions linked to its production and can provide spatial quality with low environmental impact. Keeping the buildings as an active part of the built environment requires technical solutions as well as adaption in design and fabrication process. At the PowerSKIN 2022 with the title "Build in stock – renovation strategies: inorganic, circular materials vs. organic, compostable materials" different approaches will be presented grouped into "Energy", "Envelope" and "Environment". As an international scientific event the PowerSKIN Conference builds a bridge between science and practice, between research and construction, and between the latest developments and innovations for the façade of the future.

The Technical University of Munich, Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Auer, TU Darmstadt, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Schneider and TU Delft, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Knaack, are hosting the PowerSKIN Conference this year together with the local hosts from RWTH Aachen Prof. Dr.-Ing. Linda Hildebrand and Prof. Dr-Ing. Daniele Santucci. It is the fourth event of a biennial series. Architects, engineers, and scientists present their latest developments and research projects for public discussion and reflection. The conference will be held in person and be virtually accessible.

The entrance is free. You can register here.

Online PowerSKIN Conference 2021 - Simplicity vs. Performance?

The biennial PowerSKIN conference addresses the gap between science and practice and between the different disciplines of architects, engineers and scientists.

The conference addresses the role of the building envelope in achieving a carbon-neutral building stock. The focus of the 2021 edition, "Simplicity vs. Performance?", addressed the question of whether simplicity and robustness are at odds with good building envelope performance or whether they are even complementary.

The contributions presented current scientific research results and developments as well as projects on the topic of building envelopes from the perspectives of materials, technology and design. The contribution of Recycled Building focuses on the digital design fabrication of earthen projects and presents the state of research on this topic. The related technical article was written with TU Berlin, TU Braunschweig and TU Darmstadt and is published in the Facades Journal of TU Delft.

The conference was very inspiring and contained stimulating impulses. We are already looking forward to the 4th edition in 2023!

Kick off event

Resource-efficient and recyclable construction in the Rhenish mining district

Postponed on the 22.06.2020 in Düren

As part of the launch event of ReNeReb and ReBau, we invite you to play an active role in shaping the future development of the Rhenish mining area with a focus on the construction industry.

The two projects bring together partners for resource efficiency and recycling-friendly construction in the region. One project goal is the initiation of a competence centre (within the framework of ReBau) in which various activities come together, such as the creation of databases (within the framework of ReNeReb). In this way, measures that have already been implemented and that make sense will become more visible and future steps will be further developed in the right direction. Together with you, the Rhenish mining district will thus become a nationwide pilot region for the resource turnaround in construction.

Harry Lehmann (UBA) will provide an impulse on the relevance of resource conservation and closed-loop construction as an integral part of any climate protection strategy and will rank various activities according to their urgency.

The event is aimed at political representatives, construction professionals, and interested parties.

The event is free of charge. Please send a registration form to info@aachenbuildingexperts.de
