Anna Kollmann and Katharina Mangels presented their design "Fair Fabrik" at the BAKA University Day and the "Students Design the Future" competition at BAU in Munich on 21 April 2023. This was created as part of the M1 Circular House in collaboration with the Chair of Building Theory.
The Technical University of Munich, Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Auer, the TU Darmstadt, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jens Schneider and the TU Delft, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Knaack, are hosting the PowerSKIN conference this year with local hosts RWTH Aachen University, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Linda Hildebrand and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Daniele Santucci. This is the fourth event in a biennial series. Architects, engineers and scientists will present their latest developments and research projects for public discussion and reflection. The conference will take place in person and be accessible virtually.
In an interdisciplinary collaboration, Reiff students are developing a handbook for the climate-friendly use of the faculty building at Schinkelstraße 1 as part of White Week. The event is taking place in cooperation with the Chair of Building Technology, Chair of Urban Design and the Department of Computer-aided Design.

This summer semester we offer the M1 project "Circular House" in cooperation with the Chair of Building Science. The course deals with the potential of vacant buildings to connect actors for circularity in the building sector. In this framework, a design for the reactivation of the buildings at Mauerstraße 5 will be developed.

The "ReNeReB" funding project is offering a prize for showcase projects for innovative, resource-efficient and cycle-compatible construction. The three winners are to be honored at an event in the summer.
As part of the ReBAU trade fair "Building Products as Resources", workshops and lectures will be offered covering the topics of resource conservation and circularity. Two workshops have been detached from the programme and will take place digitally in advance in February and March.

This summer semester, we are offering the research related course Building with Paper 1:1. In the framework of the project, students are invited to develop their own paper solutions and to implement these as prototypes. Accompanying the design task, there will be impulse lectures by the project partners of the DBU research project "A temporary paper house - feasibility study of an integral paper building project with a focus on constructive, spatial-climatic and ecological properties".

Prof. Hildebrand will be speaking at the international facade conference "Facade 2021 - Digital!", which is taking place on 26th November 2021 in Switzerland for the sixth time and is organised by the Building Envelope and Engineering Competence Centre of the Lucerne School of Engineering & Architecture together with the Swiss Centre for Windows and Facades (SZFF). The topic of the panel discussion with Prof. Hildebrand is "Smart Approaches to Sustainability", starting at 1:30pm (scheduled until 3pm).
Our exhibition 'building products in the cycle', originally postponed for COVID reasons, will finally take place this autumn. The materials as well as conference contributions and videos can be seen in the Foyer of Reiff museum respecting the 3G rules. A small finissage on 21st Oct. offers the possibility for discussion while having a coffee. We are looking forward to see you there!
The conference will take place from 6-8 October in Strasbourg (FR), Namur (BE) and Völklingen (DE) and digitally. Under the slogan 'to build or not to build?', the core topics of CO2/life cycle analysis, refurbishment/renovation and adaptation to climate change will be discussed. The Institute will be represented by a lecture by Prof. Hildebrand on 6.10.
Our partner project ReBau is looking for manufacturers and planners of products and construction methods that enable resource-saving and circular building. Selected products and constructions will be presented at the ReBAU trade fair in early 2022. Funding will also be provided through a balance sheet for the product.
Rezykliergerechtes Bauen, in cooperation with other researchers, recently published the article 'Ten questions concerning the potential of digital production and new technologies for contemporary earthen constructions' in the journal Building and Environment. The article is available online.
The Institute will also be represented at the annual exhibition this year. It will not take place in the Reiff Foyer but in the Aachen city space with the main exhibition venue in the Stadtsaal. The exhibition "Baustelle Ressourcenwende - Architektur im Wandel" from 2.4.-18.4.21 in Cologne, deals with the future of architectural planning, materiality, building methods and construction. Together with the EFRE funded project "Regional resource transition in the Building Economy" (ReBAU), WandelWerk Cologne and designer Claudia Saar (Die Servicekomplizin), RB is exhibiting parts from the Ecological material mini library EMMy.

At the PowerSKIN 21 / Environment conference in Munich, our assessment method for circularity potential of buildings was presented together with TU Delft. The paper is titled "A Definition of Essential Characteristics for a Method to Measure Circularity Potential in Architectural Design" and now available online.
The conference "CROSSING BOUNDARIES, Towards a circular, sustainable and vital built environment" aims to create a platform to share knowledge on the topic of 'circular and energy-efficient building' on a scientific level. The conference is a collaboration between Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, IBA Parkstad and the City Region of Parkstad organization.

Ina Weiler wins 1st prize in the 7th Bülau Competition 2019/20: Urban Spatial Perspectives for Rödingsmarkt, Herrlichkeit and Alsterfleet in Hamburg.
With her master's thesis "From Parking Garage to House Park" she implements goals of the "Circular Economy". The jury particularly emphasized that the design follows the principle of maximum preservation of substance in the sense of resource conservation.

Harry Lehmann (UBA) will give an impulse on the relevance of resource protection and closed-loop construction as an integral part of any climate protection strategy.
Alina Kretschmer will give the keynote speech at the end of the CRAVEzero funding project on June 23rd 2020, in which the results on climate-friendly and cost-optimised almost zero-energy buildings will be presented in a practical way for municipal representatives. The lecture "circular and resource-efficient building" will provide impulses for a paradigm shift in the construction sector.
Prof. Dr. Linda Hildebrand and Klaus Dosch will speak at this year's Real Estate Day 2020 in Düsseldorf. The BFW North Rhine-Westphalia organises the annual Real Estate Day, where the real estate industry, politics, administration and science come together to discuss the megatrends in the industry and to network further.
The use of circular building products requires a rethink of the entire planning process. In the summer semester we want to dedicate a research module to the topic of the flow of information in the circular planning process.
With good discussions and knowledge transfer, the Zukunft Bau Congress has made a successful contribution to a more resource-oriented construction industry. Prof. Dr. Linda Hildebrand and Prof. Dr. Sigrid Brell-Cokcan were able to introduce important impulses to building in transition.

In order to manage a new three-year project, we will fill a part-time position (50%) as project manager (f/m/d) from January 2020. The ReBau joint project establishes a regional competence centre for recycling management and resource efficiency in the construction industry.
Alina Kretschmer will speak at the symposium about the status quo and perspectives of recycling-friendly construction in Germany. The opening event of the EU-funded project 'Drive 0' in Geleen (NL) is organised by Huygen Installatie Adviseurs, ZUYD and Brightlands Chemelot Campus. The symposium will focus on the principles of recycling-friendly refurbishment, the market perspective and circular business models.

In the winter semester 2019/20 we are offering an seminar in which basic concepts on climate, energy transfer, building envelope, Heating/Ventilation/Air Conditioning systems, and user behavior are taught. Questions like how to exploit the climatic potentials of a region and avoid the undesirable conditions with design techniques are going to be elaborated.
Aktivplus e. V. is a non-profit association that acts as network and discussion platform in the context of climate-neutral buildings. The current discussion over questions like 'how much technology needs the house of the future?' or 'CO2 per capita kWh per m2 is the measure of efficiency?' is the focus of the discourse. In this context, the association aktivplus e.V. is organising a symposium on 12th of November 2019.
The current report of the VDI Center for Resource Efficiency "Deconstruction in Building Construction - Current Practices and Potentials of Resource Conservation", has been published. We contributed to the publication with the research project of HEEMwonen"Superlocal" in Kerkrade, which was accompanied by us. Here, 500 housing units from the 1960s were demolished and reused for new housing units.
In the winter semester 2019/2020 we offer an Stegreif course which deals with materials and their ecological properties. The focus is on the application of the material, which can be a recyclable detail construction, an object or a piece of furniture in which the material properties are displaced.
While „circular economy“ gets more and more important in architecture and construction, we decided to support 6 master students working on this topic in the coming semester. We are looking forward to the results!
From February 2020, the new international postgraduate degree BASEhabitat will start at the University of Art and Design Linz. It will deal with the theory and practice of sustainable architecture in a global context.

Klaus Dosch talks about the legal conditions of the circular built environment and his work at Factor X Agency. Further trend-setting and current topics from politics, science, economy and law are the focus of the conference "Resource Change in the Construction Industry" 8 May 2019 in Berlin.
Together with Carolin Stapenhorst, Junior professorshiop for tool-culture, we published an article in the journal 'Creativity Game -Theory and Practice of Spatial Planning' at the University of Ljublijana. Under the title 'Communication process and information flow in the architectural planning context' the results of the seminar Informed Design were presented.
For the Summer Semester 2019 we are offering the Stegreif 'CycleHouse'. In the design task, aspects of changeability and reusability are to be taken up and implemented in a building with flexible use. In the first life cycle the CycleHouse serves as an office building with 12 co-working spaces.
On the 14th of December 2018 on the conference in Pulheim/Cologne the acceptance of the funding for the research project 'ReNeReB' was published. We are looking forward to the cooperation with the Faktor X-Agentur and Aachen Building Experts e.V..
