Background

Energy conservation is one of the main drivers in recent design concepts especially in countries where energy is cost-intensive. Furthermore, using nonrenewable energy resources has caused numerous environmental problems such as ozone layer depletion and global warming. Consequently, there is a shift towards use of renewable energy sources in buildings. Benefiting from renewable energies is often realized in form of building configuration and passive systems. These systems as well as the form and configuration of the building are especially efficient when being implemented in the early design stages. As a result, this course seeks to familiarize students with basic energy criteria for designing buildings according to different climate zones.

 

Design Task

The course teaches concepts on basic climatic para­meters, climate zone classifications, and indoor climate comfort. In the next step, the students are prepared to le­arn design principals of each climate zone and learn how to exploit the potentials of a region and avoid undesirable conditions with design techniques.

Using the open-source software, Climate Consultant, the students are asked to analyze the weather data of a specific location and start probing relevant design strate­gies suitable for that climate. To do so, they should bring an already-designed project from their previous courses and together with the help of the instructor, devise passive energy measures in their former design to adapt it to the climate conditions. At the end of the course, the student will deliver a revised model of their design according to climatic improvisations.
