An estimated 85-95% of today's existing buildings will still be standing in 2050. Since most of the current building stock dates back to the 1980s, they often do not meet energy efficiency or climate protection requirements. The higher the legislative and financial hurdles for a renovation project, the more likely building owners and investors are to decide to demolish and rebuild a building.
However, in order to meet the climate targets set by policymakers, the preservation of bound energy in existing buildings is relevant. For buildings to be considered worthy of preservation, various criteria must be met. From a planning perspective, the following criteria are suitable: Cultural appreciation, a robust building fabric, or ease of deconstruction to ensure retrofit or reuse of individual components.
If the perspective of the building owner and investor is taken into account, cultural and functional appreciation is usually related to economic viability. If this is not the case, the result is vacancy, decay and demolition.
For rapid change in the building sector, knowledge of political support instruments for climate-friendly building is therefore also needed from a planning perspective. In their daily work, planners are increasingly confronted with the question of which funding options are available to implement a sustainable building project. Because whether a building project is implemented or not is decided not least also on the basis of the funding possibilities.
In the course, exemplary reference projects are distributed for this purpose, which deal with building in existing structures and pursue a resource-saving approach.
Based on the reference example, a research is to show possible subsidies for sustainable building in existing buildings. With the help of a specially selected graphical representation, the possibilities for implementation and the associated requirements are to be shown. In a written reflection, the students should consider to what extent the current funding landscape covers an implementation of their building projects.
