IGP Circularity in the built environment

Circular thinking in architecture connects the end of a function to the beginning of a next one. In the planning phase, the next usage is taken into account. In the last four decades, architects and planners have integrated the environmental impact into the planning process. Strategies in particular focused to increase the thermal separation of internal and external climate. Technical developments have provided access to renewable energies which has significantly reduced the amount of non-renewable raw materials for the operation of the building. The energy revolution seems to be in sight. However, the interactions between the built and natural environment are still not ideal. Now the material which forms the building substance is in focus. Reuse, renewable raw materials and new utilization concepts provide new impetus.

Within the course of the IGP, circularity of materials within the built environment is perceived form an architect's point of view. The lecture series is based on the cycle logic and deepens individual aspects for each phase. Basic ecology in construction, as well as new materials and construction principles are introduced.

Implementation circular concepts. (We work with Revit, basics are useful.)

Task 1
From an already developed design, you choose a façade, ceiling and wall construction and evaluate these three components with regard to the circulatory aspects. They assess the choice of materials, the design principle and the ecological concept based on tools.

Task 2
Based on your experience in Task 1, you can replace critical materials and joints with a circular approach. Use the BIM Planning Tool Revit as a support. For this purpose, please refer to the component and material library provided. If Task 1 already gives good results, develop innovative solutions with alternative building materials.

Task 3
Demonstrate your cycle - oriented concept using a model (for one of your components) and document this.

So far the course is planned to be held in German. It is possible to switch to English if a sufficient number of people needs to.
