Background

Materials and their ecological properties are gaining in importance in architectural discourse. In addition to aesthetics, building physics properties and economic values, parameters such as origin, production costs, logistics and future recycling routes influence the choice of materials. With an abundance of information and a constantly growing market of products and innovations at the same time, the choice of an ecologically sensible material is difficult when experience and knowledge are lacking.

Design task

Ecological Building Material Design deals with decision-making aid and the environmental impacts of building products. The focus is on the application of the material, which can be a recyclable detail construction, an object or a piece of furniture in which the material properties are thematised. A product contained in the material library Emmy or a generally available product, which is determined by own research, can be used. Basics about sustainable building products, deconstructable connections and the environmentally friendly use of materials as well as their implementation in an architectural context are taught. In a workshop (11.11.2019-14.11.2019) with students of GuTech Oman the acquired knowledge will be implemented in a design. In addition, an excursion organized by GuTech Oman with a focus on the circular value-added market in Belgium can be attended.
