Conversion instead of Demolition: Office tower, Cologne

Living in an office builing of the 80's

Masterthesis by Mascha Creutz

After less than 40 years of use, the 23-storey office tower of the Cologne justice system is threatened with demolition. This is not an isolated case. Nowadays, large-scale office buildings from the 1960s to the 1980s are characterised by widespread vacancy and are being replaced by new buildings in many places. Against the backdrop of the increasing lack of resources and landfill capacities, resource-saving conversion options for office buildings to residential buildings were investigated in the context of this work.
